Looking For A City
2012-2019
A long-term book project of photographs about returning home. I grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and spent the first part of my life trying to escape… to be anywhere other than where I was. This work examines my past while reconnecting with people and the land in the present. I continue to explore and seek to understand the connection of the land to its history and inhabitants.
These photographs express a reverence…..
for the people of Southern Louisiana, and looks to the beauty, awe, somberness and sometimes devastating effects of the often mystical landscape. In searching my memories and confronting my past I find the balance between recognition of the difficulties that many in the South still face with pride and respect for the culture and people of Southern Louisiana. And yet there are still unanswered question and conflicting feelings. I have learned to see where I am from with fresh eyes, but the lasting marks of the history of the South still remain. The things that I fled from still remain.
